Security Cameras Gain Artificial Intelligence from MIT

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has created an artificial intelligence computer system for security camera systems that will help spot intruders in real time.

The technology comes as a response to having an efficient closed circuit surveillance system which is able to distinguish between movements against the background.

The system works like a clever detective which is able to spot an intruder quickly. However, the real genius comes from the system’s ability to quickly decide how to thoroughly scan video footage. It has the choice between using skin detection algorithms, which can identify a person, or scan the background and spot an unusual object.

Closed circuit surveillance systems of the future must be smart enough to detect whether the movement in a certain area is due to an intruder or an alternative movement source, such as a pet. Raising an alarm at the slightest instance will not only lead to panic but a whole lot of explaining to the authorities. However, these security systems must also be able to quickly alert those concerned each time there is an emergency.

Researchers at MIT state that it is better to know that something is happening, even if the circumstances are vague, rather than be caught in the dark.

“Sometimes it’s important to come up with an alarm immediately, even if you are not yet positive exactly what it is happening,” said Christopher Amato, a computer science postdoctoral researcher at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. “If something bad is going on, you want to know about it as soon as possible.”
