BIO-key introduces USB fingerprint reader with IDEX sensor

February 23, 2016 -

BIO-key International has combined IDEX’s advanced off-chip sensor technology with BIO-key’s NIST-tested universal Windows Biometric Framework (WBF) fingerprint engine, to introduce the SideTouch USB fingerprint reader that operates on both Windows and Android platforms

SideTouch was developed to address the growing number of enterprise and consumer users looking to replace passwords with biometric authentication solutions such as Windows Hello, on their existing devices.

“Our Eagle off-chip fingerprint sensor solution offers a high performing touch sensor at a very compelling price point and is ideal for integration into the SideTouch USB reader,” said Dr. Hemant Mardia, CEO of IDEX. “We are very pleased to be part of this authentication solution which will drive user friendly security across multiple platforms.”

The USB fingerprint reader provides mobile device owners a biometric logon option that is affordable (MSRP $39.99), easy-to-install and easy to use.

Enterprise customers can use BIO-key’s ID Director for Active Directory and WEB-key Biometric Asset Management software in concert with SideTouch to biometrically secure their Active Directory authentication workflows for sensitive files and applications.

SideTouch can also be used in combination with over 40 BIO-key-supported fingerprint scanners, as a result of BIO-key’s unique scanner-interoperable capabilities.

Once they are enrolled, customers can use SideTouch to log onto any Windows or supported Android device with an OTG USB port.

“Thanks to the overwhelming success of Apple’s Touch ID on the iPhone, and the inclusion of finger scanners in a variety of smartphones and tablets from various manufacturers, fingerprint is unquestionably the dominant method of biometric authentication,” said Mike DePasquale, BIO-key chairman and CEO. “Numerous media articles have pointed out that most users won’t be able to use Windows Hello, because they lack the scanners to do so. BIO-key is meeting this market need with another great, affordable device incorporating new and innovative technology from IDEX.”

The product is initially being launched at Mobile World Congress, held in Barcelona, Spain from February 22- 25. IDEX is providing a live demonstration of SideTouch at its exhibition booth.

Earlier this month, as Microsoft’s biometrics solution partner, BIO-key completed a 12-city roadshow with Microsoft, which featured BIO-key’s fingerprint scanners and software solutions as part of the U.S. launch of Windows 10 for Business and Office 2016.
