Biometrics key technology to watch, says Gartner

Gartner Research has identified biometrics as a key technology to watch, according to its recent “Hype Cycle for Emerging Technology” report.

The 2012 Gartner Hype Cycle Special Report evaluates the maturity of more than 1,900 technologies and trends in 92 areas. New Hype Cycles this year include big data, the Internet of Things, in-memory computing, and strategic business capabilities, along with biometric authentication.

The report predicts that biometric authentication methods will begin to experience wide consumer adoption within two to five years. That adoption will be driven by technologies that aid natural interactions, which include gesture control.

Gartner analysts Hung LeHong and Jackie Fenn state in a Forbes article that in the near future most transactions will be electronic and technologies such as Near Field Communication (NFC), mobile over the air (OTA), and biometric authentication will enable a near-cashless world scenario.

The report notes that “natural language question answering” is on the brink of transforming human interaction with information, but computing power, both distributed and in the cloud, and algorithms remain a limiting factor to its broader progress.
