Samsung launches Galaxy S5 with embedded fingerprint sensor

Samsung launched the Galaxy S5 smartphone today, and as expected, it includes an embedded fingerprint sensor.

It also includes a heart rate sensor, though it doesn’t appear this will be used for authentication.

The new smartphone runs Android 4.4.2 (Kitkat), and sports a 2.5GHz Quad core processor and 5.1” FHD Super AMOLED display.

The fingerprint sensor is of the swipe variety, and has been embedded beneath the home button on the GS5.

It is not yet known which company manufactured the fingerprint sensor included in the GS5, and BiometricUpdate has reached out to the company for comment. An update will be provided.

Reported previously in BiometricUpdate.com, there have been many persistent rumors about Samsung’s intention to include fingerprint biometrics in the GS5. Most recently, a report came out of Korea to suggest that the fingerprint sensor could be included in the device’s screen.

Samsung was also the subject of a peculiar story in 2013 when a press release was published alleging that Samsung had acquired Fingerprint Cards for $650 million. Both companies have confirmed that the announcement was fake, and the origin and intent of the bogus release is still being investigated, though there are signs that it could be related to an earlier Adobe hack.
