Sri Lankan government launches AFIS
The Sri Lankan government has just launched its Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), which is intended to aid law enforcement agencies in the country.
Reported at Defense.lk, the AFIS has been developed solely by the Sri Lankan Information Technology engineers.
“[The] main objective of inventing such a programme is to form good governance and a peaceful living environment in the country,” Secretary to the Ministry of Defense and Urban Development Gatabaya Rajapaksa said. “International communities must look into such social benefiting research based developments and admire rather than paying attention into internal matters.”
Reported previously, the Sri Lankan government recently received cabinet approval to implement fingerprint data into the country’s passport system.
According to recent research, revenue for the global biometrics market is anticipated to reach $20 million by 2018, and national identity programs and biometric passports are major growth drivers for the industry.
