NEC launches facial recognition PC unlock app, plans to sell to companies and government agencies

NEC has launched a new biometric facial recognition system for computer unlocking tasks.

The new app, called NeoFace Monitor, uses NEC’s NeoFace facial recognition technology, as its name suggests.

Reported in CIO, NEC says its error rate in the Multiple-Biometric Evaluation Still-Face Track test was 0.3 percent, compared to 2.5 percent and 3 percent of the company’s closest competitors in a recent NIST test.

Facial images are typically stored on a server, but the system also works offline, by using the computer’s cache.

According to the CIO report, NEC aims to sell the system to about 400 companies and government agencies in Japan, North America and the rest of Asia over the next three years. The system costs about $100 per PC.

NEC was recently recognized with a 2014 Global Frost & Sullivan Award for customer value leadership for its facial recognition systems.

Reported previously, NEC recently launched two new biometrics-based solutions for the hospitality industry. One, a facial recognition system to recognize VIP guests. The other, a facial recognition system to anonymously capture visitor attributes.
