Royal Oman Police say biometric passports will replace old documents this year
The Royal Oman Police have confirmed that by the end of the year, machine-readable passports in the country will be replaced by ePassports containing biometric information.
According to a report in the Times of Oman, the new ePassport system will also be accompanied by the full implementation of an eVisa facility for expatriates.
Also according to the Times of Oman report, the ROP signed a contract with a German consulting firm for the ePassport project and in the beginning of 2013, a global firm was contracted to provide citizens with enhanced services and protection of ePassport technology.
Reported previously in BiometricUpdate.com, early in 2013, Gemalto announced that it would provide the ROP with an end-to-end ePassport solution for the Sultante. This included travel documents, as well as a Coesys biometric solution suite to enroll citizens.
According to research from the Biometrics Research Group, revenues within the global ePassports market will reach US$10.2 billion by 2015, with 500 million ePassports being issued.
