Biometric voter registration to be used for 2018 Pakistan election
The Election Commission of Pakistan announced last week it will began using electronic voting machines at the upcoming 2018 general elections, according to a report by the Pakistan Tribune.
ECP secretary Ishtiaq Ahmed Khan made the announcement Thursday as part of the ECP’s strategic plan for 2014-2018, and said that all political parties have long demanded for the introduction of biometric machines.
While the electoral body has already issued the needed instructions for the manufacturing of prototype machines for pilot projects, the use of electronic machines in the general polls will require legislation from the parliament, Khan said.
So far, the ECP has enrolled more than 4.5 million expatriates with NICs for overseas Pakistanis as voters, however, legislation would also be needed for letting overseas citizens vote at the polling stations set up in other countries.
Biometrics have been a hot topic in Pakistan as of late. Reported previously in BiometricUpdate.com, last year the Sindh High Court mandated that all SIM card sales be accompanied with the biometric verification of customers.
