Namibian Biometric Research Lab publishes list of biometric e-voting criteria ahead of presidential election
The Biometric Research Laboratory has published a list of electronic voting selection criteria, ahead of Namibia’s upcoming biometric election.
According to a New Era report, this list includes open consultation with electoral stakeholders in respective countries; independent comprehensive research into available technologies; the technology must be evaluated against well-defined objectives for implementation.
“Researchers from the Biometric Research Laboratory (BRL), show that it is vital to understand both the benefits and weaknesses of the e-voting technology,” the article notes. “Implementing e-voting technology is complex and requires comprehensive research and consultations.”
Reported previously in BiometricUpdate.com, voter registration for the upcoming Namibian elections ended earlier this year, and altogether 904 individual machines will be used to verify the identities of voters on election day.
“All systems are ready and in place but it is important to note that the success of any electoral process depends on how the electoral and stakeholders are educated about the process,” Electoral Commission chairperson, Notemba Tjipueja said in a previous report in The Namibian.
