Idiap engineers developing vein reading biometric wristwatch

Engineers from the Idiap Research Institute are currently developing a new vein reading biometric watch called BioWatch, enabling users to own and control the watch themselves.

Joe Rice – touted as the inventor of vein recognition – has partnered with Matthias Vanoni and the engineers at Idiap in Martigny, Switzerland to develop a personal worn biometric system that will secure people’s transactions.

At the core of BioWatch is the wrist vein reader, a wearable technology that reads the vein pattern of the user’s wrist.

The watch matches the user’s stored reference wrist pattern, verifying their identity every time they strap on the watch. If an unauthorized individual tries to use the watch, it will be locked.

BioWatch communicates in an encrypted and secure way via near field communication and Bluetooth, according to the press release.

The technology is designed to be interoperable across all hardware and software environments, and does not require the use of a smartphone.

BioWatch demonstrates how the biometric wristband works in a video posted on its website, as shown below. It is now available for pre-order on the company website.
