Toyota to showcase research vehicle with custom biometric software
Toyota will showcase the latest generation Driver Awareness Research Vehicle, DARV1.5, at this week’s Meeting of the Minds 2014 summit in Detroit, according to a report by Green Car Congress.
The car is developed in partnership with Microsoft Research as part of Toyota’s continued research in driver distraction at Ann Arbor’s Collaborative Safety Research Center.
First introduced last November at the Los Angeles Auto Show, DARV is designed to help decrease the number of distractions before the driver even starts the car.
The Toyota DARV 1.5 uses Microsoft’s Surface and Kinect and custom biometric software, along with algorithms by Infosys, enabling the driver, passengers and the vehicle to work together to achieve safer driving.
One of the more intriguing features of the vehicle is the “driver lock-in,” which identifies the individual at the wheel by tracking his or her body frame and automatically enables or disables control features based on the person who is using the control panel.
DARV also makes use of new wearable devices, such as smart watches, to control essential vehicle functions.
The vehicle helps to create a safer driving environment by measuring driver behavior and generating a driving “score” based on safe driving choices.
The annual Meeting of the Minds summit, which was co-founded by Toyota, will focus on urban transformation and the processes of using the power of technology.
