Tokyo’s National Olympic Stadium to deploy facial recognition technology
The National Olympic Stadium in Tokyo will deploy advanced technology including facial recognition in preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics and Paralympics, according to a report by The Japan News.
Japan Sport Council, which operates the stadium, is collaborating with the Japanese government and major companies like Toyota Motor Corporation to deploy facial recognition and 3-D projection technologies at the new stadium to meet worldwide demand.
The Council plans to implement a ticketless entrance system with facial recognition as a security measure against terrorism.
A study panel led by former Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori, head of the organizing committee of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic games has been established to consider bids for the various technologies.
“Stadiums that offer comfort even in a severe environment and take counterterrorism measures would be in high demand in Asia and the Middle East,” said a spokesperson for the Japan Sport Council. “We also will promote [high-tech stadiums] to the United States and Europe, where stadiums need reconstructing.”
The renovated stadium is expected to hold 80,000 spectators, which would make it the largest stadium in the nation. In addition to sporting events, the stadium will also be used for concerts and other major events.
Previously reported, Hitachi recently developed a finger vein scanner prototype that enables users to simply wave their finger over the scanner to quickly gain access to sports stadiums, convention centers and other large venues.
