CrucialTec granted patent for under-screen fingerprint sensor
CrucialTec has been granted a patent for new technology to install fingerprint sensors under the display panels of smartphones, according to a report by the Korea Herald.
The announcement came a few days after reports that Apple had filed a patent for technology to move its fingerprint sensors from the home button of its products to underneath the touch screen.
CrucialTec originally filed the patent back in 2012, but the registration was only recently completed.
Unlike existing swipe fingerprint scanners deployed on Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones and area sensors on Apple’s iPhones, CrucialTec’s fingerprint sensors are embedded under the display panel of a smartphone.
As a result, smartphone users are to authenticate their identity by simply touching the smartphone display.
“The technology, which removes the necessity of hardware buttons for fingerprint authentication, will allow more leeway for smartphone manufacturers in product design,” said a CrucialTec official.
The Korean firm, which provides swipe fingerprint scanners to smartphone manufacturers around the world, has been developing and testing the latest biometric modules for the past few years.
