High demand for fingerprint scanners suggests more devices may integrate biometric security
Next Biometrics Group has seen unprecedented demand for small-format fingerprint readers as of last month, which suggests that fingerprint-recognition capabilities may be integrated into a range of consumer products by the end of 2015, according to a report by CSO Australia.
Next Biometrics recently confirmed that last month, six different manufacturing clients have ordered large quantities of its fingerprint sensors and related SDK to use within their development processes.
Although the company did not disclose the names of the companies, Next Biometrics CEO Tore Etholm-Idsøe recently said that each of the projects represented “6-digit volume potential”.
“All of the customers requesting our products in January have made it clear that they need the quality of a large area fingerprint sensor at a very low price,” said Etholm-Idsøe.
The integration of biometrics in Apple and Samsung products has propelled the technology into the forefront, especially after Apple’s iOS 8 operating system expanded the fingerprint recognition capabilities to other applications.
Several banks around the world have all integrated fingerprint scanning capabilities as a second layer of authentication within their mobile banking apps, while the Apple Pay platform uses fingerprint scanning to conduct sensitive transactions.
