Afghan Wireless to distribute government salaries via biometric mobile payment system

Afghan mobile carrier Afghan Wireless Communication Company (AWCC) announced that the government is deploying its biometric mobile payment system to distribute salary payments to employees across Afghanistan, according to a report by the Telecom Paper.

The digital payments project stems from a partnership between AWCC, the Ministry of Finance, New Kabul Bank, Maiwand Bank and the United States Agency for International Development, which provided initial start-up funding for the project.

AWCC’s MyMoney platform is a biometrics-based application that ensures that only the intended recipient receives the salary payment.

Using My Money, subscribers are able to purchase items at participating stores, organize and pay bills, and transfer money between users.

The mobile application offers a range of security features, including a four-step identification process that uses biometric data and passwords, as well as SIM cards and NFC tags.

The MyMoney platform will enable government employees to securely and easily receive their salary in a timely and transparent method.

The payment platform is part of a greater initiative by AWCC, its partner banks and the Afghanistan government to provide citizens with alternatives to cash, which decreases the potential for corruption, improves governance and boosts financial and economic security.

AWCC said that My-Money will give more than 90 percent of the Afghanistan population the opportunity to conduct banking via their AWCC mobile device.
