Apple applies for seven biometrics related patents

The U.S. Patent & Trademark Office recently published a series of seven patent applications relating to biometrics, filed by Apple, according to a report by Patently Apple.

The seven patents span a range of features related to credential verification processes that are used in association with Apple’s Touch ID, Apple Pay, unlocking redacted documents and more.

One of the main patents for Apple’s fingerprint related inventions is titled “Device, Method, and Graphical User Interface for Manipulating User Interfaces based on Fingerprint Sensor Inputs,” which describes a method used on an electronic device with a display and a fingerprint sensor.

The patent application describes the method as follows: storing a set of one or more credentials; displaying a form with fields corresponding to one or more credentials of the set of one or more credentials; receiving a request to automatically fill in the form with one or more credentials of the set of one or more credentials, wherein the request includes a finger input on the fingerprint sensor; in response to receiving the request to automatically fill in the form: in accordance with a determination that the finger input includes a fingerprint that is associated with a user who is authorized to use the set of one or more credentials, filling in the form with the one or more credentials; and in accordance with a determination that the finger input includes a fingerprint that is not associated with a user who is authorized to use the set of one or more credentials, forgoing filling in the form with the one or more credentials.

The second biometric/fingerprint related patent titled, “Use of a Biometric Image in Online Commerce,” relates to how an “online store can transmit an online account token to an electronic device or to a biometric sensing device after a user successfully enters his or her account password.”

The remaining five biometric patents filed by Apple include technologies relating to reconstructing a biometric image, biometric sensor stack structure, finger biometric sensor including circuitry for acquiring finger biometric data upon finger stability and related methods, noise reduction in biometric images, and finger biometric sensor for flagging as sufficient enrollment finger biometric data sets and related methods.
