TSMC to make fingerprint sensors for next iPhone model

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will manufacture fingerprint sensors to be used in the next-generation iPhone series at its 12-inch wafer fabs using 65nanometer process technology, according to a Digitimes report citing industry sources.

Existing iPhone models have fingerprint sensors that use TSMC’s 0.18-micron process at the foundry’s 8-inch facilities, according to the sources.

Apple first offered the Touch ID fingerprint scanner with its iPhone 5s series, which was largely responsible for driving the market for fingerprint-enabled smartphones.

The sources also said that TSMC receives fingerprint sensor orders of 30,000-50,000 8-inch wafers a month for Apple’s existing iPhone models.
