Biometrics and law enforcement, new SIBA CEO, identity as a service and more top stories

Here’s a recap of the most popular biometrics industry news that appeared on BiometricUpdate.com this past week.

SIBA appoints new CEO

In what is arguably one of the biggest biometrics stories this week, Secure Identity & Biometrics Association (SIBA) appointed former Raytheon executive Michael T. Dougherty as the organization’s new Chief Executive Officer.

Law enforcement

The FBI has recently expanded its biometrics programs with two major developments that will reportedly impact Americans on a day to day level more than any other biometrics initiative the national law enforcement agency has previously implemented, according to a report by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF).

In a Q&A interview, Adam Weiner, a principal with Booz Allen Hamilton, discussed their VAMPIRE forensic devices, its capabilities, and how they differ from their competition.

MorphoTrust USA (Safran) has introduced the Identix Trusted Identity-as-a-Service (TIaaS) platform, a set of multimodal biometric identification (fingerprint, face, iris and palm), document authentication, and data verification services that help customers verify their identity.

Fingerprints Technology

This week brought along several stories involving fingerprints, proving that it is one of the leading modalities in the biometrics market.

First off, Precise Biometrics announced that its product for fingerprint recognition in mobile devices, Precise BioMatch Mobile, has been integrated in 30 smartphones from over 15 different vendors during 2015.

In a separate announcement, Precise Biometrics announced that it received the 2015 Global Fingerprint Biometrics for Mobile Devices Customer Value Leadership Award at the Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Award Ceremony in Seoul, South Korea.

Crossmatch announced at the Global Identity Summit it has launched two new livescan solutions, including the new Guardian 200 ten-print scanner and the latest models of L Scan palm scanners.

IDEX ASA has received the first production order for its new off-chip fingerprint sensor product from World Wide Touch Technology Holding Ltd (WWTT).

Morpho (Safran) has introduced two new products to its MorphoAccess (MA) SIGMA family of biometric access control and time solutions, called the MorphoAccess SIGMA Lite series.

And finally, in a story that contradicts the otherwise popular notion that fingerprint biometrics offer a relatively high accuracy rate, fingerprint background checks performed by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation at the request of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services have often failed to uncover the criminal histories of individuals seeking employment.

Biometrics research

In the first of two intriguing reports this week, the Biometrics Institute released its new guiding paper, “Top 10 Vulnerability Questions”, to its members and key stakeholders, which helps to clarify some of the commonly asked questions regarding the spoofing of biometrics.

Additionally, Persistence Market Research published a new report entitled “Face and Voice Biometrics Market: Global Industry Analysis and Forecast 2015 – 2021”.

Visa adds biometric authentication

In its ongoing strategy to increase security measures and reduce theft, Visa Inc. introduced a new specification which will integrate palm, voice, iris, or facial authentication capabilities with chip card transaction.

Facial recognition

Socure announced it has introduced Perceive, a new solution designed to curb potential online financial fraud by using facial recognition to confirm a person’s identity.

And finally, Vancouver Airport Authority announced that its BorderXpress kiosks in use at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) have expanded its visa processing capabilities and will soon introduce a new facial recognition technology feature.
