Upgrading biometric technologies

The U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, which continue to incorporate biometrics into their respective operations, recently revealed that they are considering upgrading biometric technologies to enable military officials to better identify individuals both up close and far away.

Nymi names CEO

Nymi Inc. announced it named John Haggard the new chief executive officer in advance of next year’s launch for its first commercial product.

Future of biometrics

In a guest post, Facebanx director of business development Steve Cook discussed the future landscape of the biometrics industry.

Fingerprint authentication

Stories involving fingerprint biometrics seemed to dominate headlines this week. First, the European Association for Biometrics (EAB) hosted its second ‘Biometrics in Banking and Payments’ seminar on October 16 in London, which explored the role of biometric technologies in the financial industry. We spoke to IDEX CEO Hemant Mardia before his presentation.

Next, Intelligent Fingerprinting presented evaluation data from its pilot project testing the potential use of its new mobile fingerprint drug screening solution by coroners and mortuary staff to collect early intelligence about cause of death.

Fingerprint authentication firm Zwipe raised $5 million in equity from Photon Future Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of the Kuang-Chi Group, making the high-tech Chinese holding group Zwipe’s largest shareholder with a 20% stake in the company.

Turning over to fingerprint applications in border control, the French delegation in Brussels has asked the European Commission to broaden the scope of the ‘smart borders’ initiative to include European nationals, which would require all travelers to submit their fingerprints and potentially have their faces scanned.

In fingerprint biometrics-related research, ABI Research published new findings from its Biometric Technologies and Applications Research Service which forecasts that fingerprint sensors for smartphones are expected to reach 1 billion shipments by 2020, marking a 17% CAGR increase.

And in an unexpected fingerprint-related story, ride-hailing service Uber is reportedly testing Live Scan fingerprinting, despite publicly rejecting fingerprinting background checks for its drivers.

Facial recognition

INTERPOL recently held a symposium from October 6-7 at the General Secretariat headquarters where it focused on developing best practices in facial recognition technology.

Mastercard is rolling out MasterCard Identity Check, the credit card firm’s new payments system that enables consumers to make online purchases using facial or fingerprint recognition technologies.

Biometrics 2015

Biometrics 2015 kicked off this past week in London and BiometricUpdate.com was on location at the event to provide full coverage of the annual conference and exhibition.

As one of many products announced at Biometrics 2015, Hoyos Labs announced its new four-finger (4F) smartphone technology at the conference, as well as provided a full demonstration.

Payments and banking

Biometric technologies continued to see activity in the payments and banking sector this week. First, SmartMetric has developed a miniature USB-enabled chip card connector for reading its biometric chip card for online computer and or mobile phone purchases.

And finally, EyeVerify CEO and founder Toby Rush wrote a blog post in which he proposed that the biometrics industry needs to define standards around Payment Grade biometrics to determine the strength of a given biometric solution.
