Hong Leong Bank adds fingerprint authentication payment option on app

Malaysian bank Hong Leong Bank has added a biometric fingerprint authentication payment option on its Connect mobile application, according to a report by The Edge Markets.

The biometric payment authentication option, which marks the first of its kind in Malaysia, is expected to help increase the bank’s digital banking user base.

“Before this, mobile banking apps using biometric authentication only allowed users to check balances,” said HLIB managing director and CEO Raja Teh Maimunah. “So with Hong Leong Connect on your mobile devices, you can even leave your wallet behind.”

The bank’s fingerprint authentication mobile app function enables users to access and perform various services, including checking balances, transferring funds, cardless ATM withdrawals, and retail merchant payments.

The function is currently available on smartphone models equipped with biometric fingerprint scanning capabilities, such as Apple devices (iPhone 5s and above) and Android devices (Samsung Galaxy S6 and above running on OS 5.11 and above).

In order to use HLB’s biometric authentication function, customers must first enable the Touch ID or fingerprint feature on their smartphone and register their fingerprint on the same device.

As an extra security measure, all transactions which exceed the RM200 (US$48) limit will require HLB customers to also enter their password to execute the transaction.
