Thailand police to implement facial recognition at all border checkpoints
The Royal Thai Police announced it will install facial recognition scanners at all border checkpoints to speed up the immigration screening process as well as prevent transnational crimes, according to a report by Bangkok Post.
The face recognition technology will be installed at every border checkpoint to scan the facial features of people and detect if they match criminal profiles stored on a national database, according to Police General Prawut Thavornsiri.
The current immigration screening checking process makes it difficult to identify the true nationality of travelers and determine if they have criminal records, as some individuals use fake passports.
Police launched the face recognition technology project following the fatal Erawan shrine bombing at Ratchaprasong intersection on August 17, which left 20 killed and 130 wounded.
Police General Prawut said the department has already begun the terms of reference process for the purchase of the equipment, although it did not specify the exact number of scanners that will be purchased.
Additionally, police plan to implement firearms and counterfeit vehicle licence plate identification systems at the border checkpoints.
