Australian ride sharing company NetCABS adds facial recognition to its booking app

Australian vehicle dispatch system NetCABS has developed its booking app to feature a unique digital meter, real-time GPS tracking technology, driver facial recognition, built-in payment systems and the ability to track journeys and share locations via text message and social media.

The NetCABS system has been in trial since July and will launch in the broader Western Australian market in March 2016 as Oiii.

NetCABS managing director and founder Caroline Woodhouse said their technology offered the potential for cheaper fares, increased operating efficiency and a host of unprecedented safety features. “After listening to the many issues facing the current taxi system, we have developed a new model that will bring the taxi industry in line with the most up-to-date technology and safety features”.

Woodhouse said safety had been a key priority when developing the technology. “With the introduction of Oiii, users will receive an alert straight to their smartphone as their taxi approaches, and they will also have the added peace of mind of the driver facial recognition technology and enhanced criminal background checks.”

Oiii will be available to various on-demand transport services including taxis and charter vehicles around the first quarter of 2016.

In related news, various municipal governments across the United States including Austin, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, have long been pressuring Uber to implement fingerprint checks on its drivers and in May, Uber invited 500 drivers in Los Angeles and Burbank to participate in the Live Scan fingerprinting process to “conduct a study on the effectiveness” of Live Scan.
