Biometric civil ID program being considered in Lagos

The Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) is looking to partner with the Nigerian Immigration Service and other national organizations using biometric identification as part of its efforts to encourage residents to register for the State Residency Programme, reports Nigerian media.

LASSRA general manager, Mr. Olumide Lawal, explained that the agency has a mandate to create a reliable database of all residents in the state in order to aid the government in planning and equitable allocation of resources and according to him, “in order to ensure the success of the registration exercise … collaboration with relevant organizations like Nigerian Immigration Service, Banking Industry (for the Bank Verification Numbers), Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) for the drivers’ license and other relevant Agencies are undertaken”.

Mr. Lawal also disclosed that there is a new policy coming for the on-going residency registration programme which will be used to access all state government services.

Mr. Mustapha Bala-Maikaba, head of the Passport Office, said that he welcomed the policy initiatives of the state government and the desire for a working relationship between LASSRA and the Immigration office. He also noted that it is in the country’s best interest that the offices collaborate effectively on the biometric identification system to combat crime.
