Biometrics to confirm homeowner identity at housing project in South Africa
South Africa’s Department of Human Settlements (DHS) will soon launch a biometric identification system for the N2 Gateway Housing Project in Cape Town to ensure houses are given to and occupied by their rightful owners, according to report by the South African Governement News Agency.
“In 2016 we are going to launch a biometric system to ensure the houses we are giving out today and those we have handed over in the past are occupied by their rightful owners,” said DHS Minister Sisulu.
With the identity verification system, beneficiaries will have their biometrics registered and there will be regular follow up to ensure the right people are still in their houses.
The Department of Human Settlements has delivered more than 14,000 housing units since the launch of the N2 Gateway Project in 2005 and expect to deliver 23,000 housing opportunities to more than 110,000 households.
Previously reported, South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs plans to implement biometrics capturing devices at every port of entry by August 2016, following the recent launch of its pilot program to collect biometric data at the country’s international airports.
