Malaysia’s Deputy PM wants standardized biometrics screening for ASEAN borders
All ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries should have a standardized security screening system for people who enter their respective entry points, according to a report by The New Straits Times Online.
Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the standardized system should use biometrics such as fingerprints and facial recognition for identity verification.
“ASEAN countries should have its own template in border security screening with the use of uniformed documents,” said Zahid. “This should be done with the use of Advanced Passenger Screening System (APSS), the use of biometrics for fingerprint and facial recognition for all who enter ASEAN countries.”
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations is a political and economic organization of ten Southeast Asian countries and includes Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar (Burma), and Vietnam.
