Algeria begins issuing biometric national identity cards this month

Algeria’s Council of Ministers, chaired by President Bouteflika, recently released a statement that the Algeria biometric national identity card will start being issued this month.

The biometric identity card will include a national identification number for each citizen and will encourage the modernization of government services and promotion of electronic administration across the country as all public services “would be digitized and would become accessible to users, administrations and companies,” said the statement.

President Bouteflika also encouraged the use of a biometric national identity card, as it will “help speed up the governance of public affairs in our country,” and instructed the government to “mobilize all necessary resources to ensure its use nationwide the soonest possible.”
