MedicFP incorporates Fujitsu’s palm-vein biometrics into its patient identity solution

MedicFP LLC and Fujitsu will debut a patient identity validation solution that uses palm vein biometrics at the Health IT Conference for 2016 (HIMSS16).

According to a report in Healthcare IT News, MedicFP CEO Wendell Elms said that MedicFP is incorporating Fujitsu’s palm vein biometric solution as part of MedicFP’s Verify product, which is used to confirm a patient’s identity and eligibility before service is rendered or a claim is created.

At the point of care, a provider can use MedicFP’s Verify software and the palm vein scanner to confirm the identity of a patient and then link providers and payers to that patient’s credentials and eligibility, once a scan and credentials are stored within a healthcare organization’s information systems.

The company says that it chose palm veins to authenticate because they provide a more absolute and unique identity than any other part of a person’s body.

“The success rate with scanning retinas, fingerprints, faces and voices are not as good as with the palm-vein,” Elms said. “With fingerprinting, for instance, there is much higher room for error because fingerprints can be worn down. Further, with fingerprinting, people are afraid to touch things in hospitals for fear of disease. The palm can hover over the scanner.”

Market analyst firm Tractica published a report last August entitled “Biometrics in the Healthcare Industry”, which provides a 10-year forecasts for the period from 2015 through 2024 in which the worldwide healthcare biometrics market will reach a cumulative revenue of $12.5 billion by 2024.
