Ohio hospital implements CrossChx biometric patient identification solution

Akron General is connecting patients to its electronic health records using the CrossChx biometric patient identification solution, SafeChx, to instantly verify patient identity through fingerprint scanning and alert hospital personnel to potential medical record errors, according to a report by Cleveland Business.

Akron General set up the SafeChx solution in its major registration areas and has been collecting several hundred new fingerprint IDs each day since November. The enrollment process takes about 30 seconds and is available for the patient to use immediately once enrolled. The report says that some returning patients use their fingerprint to check in every day.

Hospital staff also check patients’ names and birthdays but the fingerprint solution helps them to instantly and accurately confirm patient identity. CrossChx claims that up to 10% of all medical records are duplicates which can be created with misspellings or typos.

Back in November, CrossChx announced the expansion of its CrossChx Identity Resolution Coalition (CIRC) to 200 hospitals across the United States. Through the coalition, CrossChx takes all the elements of a patient’s medical identity including fingerprints and resolves it to one complete record. At the time of the announcement, CIRC had resolved over 33 million patient profiles.
