Synaptics shows off new under glass fingerprint sensor solution

Synaptics, a leading developer of human interface solutions, recently demonstrated its Natural ID fingerprint authentication technology under greater than 200μm cover glass, illustrating the potential of button-free industrial designs for smartphones.

The versatile new fingerprint sensor solution is designed to operate through glass buttons as well as thicker cover glass. Synaptics’ under glass fingerprint solution is deemed a significant advancement and a critical next step to putting capacitive fingerprint sensors under the smartphone cover glass.

In a statement, Ritu Favre, Senior Vice President and General Manager at Synaptics’ Biometrics Product Division said: “We are very pleased to demonstrate our new under cover glass biometric solution and showcase our leadership. Our solution eliminates the cutout, which allows smartphone OEMs to improve yields and offer creative new industrial designs. End users will benefit from an improved user experience and a more durable, scratch-resistant smartphone.”

Synaptics showed its under glass technology to BiometricUpdate.com earlier this month at the Consumer Electronics Show.

The technology is Synaptics’ second generation under glass fingerprint authentication product, which can reputedly sense under thicker glass better than any other solution currently on the market.

The technology is fully architected in-house and highlights the firm’s strategic acquisition of Validity. The company’s first generation under glass button (up to 100μm thick glass) solution is available today for mass production, while this new 200μm generation product will be made available by the end of first quarter 2016.

Synaptics develops human interface solutions based on touch, display and biometrics technologies for a large range of mobile computing, PC, entertainment and other consumer electronic devices.

The firm’s customers include companies such as Acer, Amazon, Asus, Dell, Google, HP, HTC, Lenovo, LG, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung, Sony, Sony Ericsson, Huawei, ZTE, BlackBerry and Toshiba.
