Bulgaria to introduce biometric identity cards

Bulgaria’s Deputy Interior Minister Krasimir Tsipov announced this week that the country will soon introduce identity cards containing biometric data that will allow passage through eGates at EU airports.

According to a report by the Sofia News Agency, the new ID cards will also include an electronic identification option and will serve as an electronic signature to allow Bulgarian citizens to access online services offered by the state.

Last November the government decided to move to a centralized system of issuing identity documents, including ID cards, driver’s licences and passports, to boost security and cut costs.

Tsipov said that the switchover is expected to cost about $266M USD, VAT excluded, and will be financed from the Operational Programme Good Governance and the Internal Security Fund of the European Union.

The centralized system is expected to start functioning in late 2017 or early 2018.
