Lotte Card and Fujitsu launch biometric self-registration for payment system

Lotte Card and Fujitsu recently debuted the world’s first “HandPay” self-registration system that allows consumers to register their biometrics without having to visit a Lotte retail outlet.

HandPay is a retail payment system established by Lotte and Fujitsu in South Korea last year. It is a biometrics authentication scheme that identifies customers through palm scans. The system will identify products being bought, using a 360-degree scanning technique.

Previously, consumers had to physically bring their IDs to Lotte Card Centers within Lotte Department Stores to register their biometrics.

Now with the registration system, customers can self-register their biometrics. After doing so, they can fully authenticate their identity using a new mobile application entitled ‘Lotte Card Lie’, which creates barcodes for authentication purposes after the self-registration process. The registration process takes place after authenticating barcodes through the self-register systems, which take the form of kiosk.

In May, BiometricUpdate.com reported that a 7-Eleven outlet was testing the self-checkout system. Under that test scenario only customers that had registered with Hand Pay could enter the 7-Eleven outlet. Customers need to scan the palm of their hand at the entrance of the store to confirm their identity.

Lotte notes that they are going to first install the first self-registers at the 7-Eleven Signature Number 1 Store within Lotte World Tower and at the 7-Eleven Signature Number 2 store within the Lotte Insurance Building.

Lotte plans to install these self-registers at all of its subsidiaries, including Lotte Department Stores, Lotterias, and Hi-Marts, so that their customers can take advantage of non-face-to-face authentication and payments.
