Facial recognition company SenseNets silent following data leak

Shenzhen-based biometrics provider SenseNets Technology has yet to comment about a data leak that exposed the personal information of millions of people for months, but its website has gone offline and the company is performing an internal investigation, an anonymous source told the news site Caixin.

Victor Gevers, a Dutch security researcher with the GDI Foundation, recently discovered a database with more than 2.5 million records including names, ID card numbers, home addresses, dates of birth, employment information and locations where the company’s biometric technology had identified them within the past 24 hours, among other information. GDI Foundation warned the company in July, but did not receive a response.

SenseTime had previously owned a 49 percent stake in SenseNets, Caixin reports, but exited around the time GDI notified SenseNets of its breach. SenseTime did not provide a reason for its divestment.
