LogMeIn expands LastPass to provide biometric MFA for SMBs

LogMeIn has expanded the LastPass Business solutions suite to give small and medium sized businesses (SMBs) biometric-based adaptive LastPass MFA, new single sign-on (SSO) technology for more than 1,200 apps, and LastPass Identity in addition to its established password management capabilities.

The launch is a major milestone in LogMeIn’s longer-term strategy, which includes expanding LastPass into a complete identity offering for SMBs, the company says in the announcement. The company also notes that many SMBs lack the resources to put robust security measures in place, and Verizon’s 2019 Data Breach Investigation Report shows 43 percent of small businesses experience data breaches.

“While SSO provides security and convenience and is a fundamental component of any Identity and Access Management program, it doesn’t cover all of the apps being used in a workplace. Let’s face it: sometimes implement SSO with a SAML compliant application can be a lot of work as not all applications implement SAML well,” says IDC Cybersecurity Products Program Vice President Frank Dickson. “The reality of today’s work environment is that hundreds of cloud applications are being introduced by employees and the IT teams are pressured to achieve high levels of security without introducing complex authentication processes that may reduce workforce productivity.”

BIO-key launched a SAML solution to enable biometric access to cloud apps and IAM platforms earlier this year.

LastPass MFA goes beyond standard two-factor authentication with biometric and contextual factors, LogMeIn says. LastPass Enterprise provides access-point security, and now includes the SSO technology for pre-integrated apps, while LastPass Identity combines LastPass Enterprise and LastPass MFA for a holistic view of end user activity, at a price of $8 per user per month. The full suite will be available in early Q3.

“Password management is usually a customer’s first step in deploying identity management. Over the years as we worked with thousands of customers to manage access, it became clear that the needs of SMBs were not being met,” said John Bennett, General Manager, Identity and Access Management Business Unit at LogMeIn. “With our new identity and access management offerings, we’re providing these companies with secure, flexible solutions that easily fit into their existing infrastructure, allow for a simple deployment, and at the same time meet the expectations of their end users.”

LogMeIn will hold webinar demonstrating LastPass Identity on July 17.
