Biometrics consolidation reflects shift to continuous identity

AI fraud, deepfake detection and identity lifecycle platforms reshape the market
Biometrics consolidation reflects shift to continuous identity

AI-driven fraud is reshaping the biometrics industry. This week’s acquisitions, product launches and market developments all point toward the same destination: continuous identity, layered assurance and trust infrastructure spanning the entire customer lifecycle. Digital sovereignty, however, could limit consolidation in some markets.

Deepfake dynamism

Deepfake detection is in the midst of an adoption explosion that makes it a $3 billion market this year and growing fast, according to the report released by Biometric Update and Goode Intelligence late last week.

The Deepfake Fraud Detection Market 2026: Securing Identity in the AI Era” includes expanded market analysis and an extensive buyer’s guide for enterprises looking for deepfake detection to defend biometric identity verification and authentication systems.

The deepfake fraud attacks fueling the market just keep getting easier. Cybernews reports on an alarming side-hustle growing in popularity in China, in which people sell licenses to use their faces for AI-generated content. Prices range from $15 to $700.

The dynamism of the market’s supply side was on full display this week, with a trio of launches that each address different segments within it.

A new platform from Secured Signing uses repeated face biometrics and deepfake detection checks for continuous identity verification, while Scam.ai’s new software runs deepfake detection on user’s device and Fraunhofer’s prototype real-time video deepfake detection combines audio and visual analysis.

New rules for social media are part of India’s response to a different aspect of the deepfake problem. The government is also supporting local deepfake detection research and trying to raise public awareness.

The importance of dedicated deepfake detection is shown by a recent Reality Defender red team experiment. The team successfully enrolled two synthetic faces into Google’s new biometric account recovery system using camera-swapping and camera manipulation techniques.

Consolidation toward continuous

Payroll and HR firm Deel is acquiring Clarity to integrate its identity verification to protect against candidate fraud, another of the many areas where deepfakes have been weaponized. Clarity’s tech will be integrated with Deel IT to cover the full employment pipeline.

The week kicked off with Visa’s massive $2.4 billion all-cash deal to acquire behavioral biometrics and intelligence pioneer BioCatch. The deal extends Visa’s fraud prevention capabilities further into the customer or user relationship lifecycle.

The merger between Veridas and Fourthline also reflects the industry trend towards broader unified coverage across the identity lifecycle. Veridas CEO Eduardo Azanza tells the Biometric Update podcast that companies need more power and capabilities to fight “the fraud pandemic” powered by AI.

Assa Abloy announced a deal to acquire Gunnebo Entrance Control, significantly expanding its portfolio of eGates and other access control technologies, many of them implemented with biometric authentication.

Sovereignty and age assurance evidence

The influence of national and regional sovereignty considerations on the digital identity market and an early dose of evidence about the impact of age assurance also made headlines this week.

The Netherlands’ decision to block U.S.-based Kyndryl’s attempted acquisition of Solvinity stands out in the combined context of those above and the implications for the opportunity presented by the broader rollout of digital identity services, including EUDI Wallets, across Europe. Changes in international relations must inevitably affect who can be involved with digital identity infrastructure if it is considered a national security issue, and present a possible counter-force against consolidation.

Social media account ownership dropped 10 percent in the first 3 months of Australia’s new age assurance regime, even though most kids haven’t been asked to confirm their age yet. The early evidence suggests that platform non-compliance is limiting the policy’s impact much more than circumvention or age check system errors.
