From behavior to payment: Visa builds trust across the customer lifecycle

Visa’s agreement to acquire BioCatch for $2.4 billion raises an important strategic question: Why would a global payments network invest so heavily in behavioral and device intelligence?

The answer lies in what happens before a payment reaches Visa’s network. Visa already has extensive visibility into transactions. BioCatch provides intelligence about the identity, device, behavior and intent behind them. Combined with Visa’s acquisition of Featurespace, the deal shows Visa building trust infrastructure across the consumer lifecycle.

Visa acquired Featurespace in 2024. The company develops real-time AI payment-protection technology designed to prevent and mitigate payment fraud and financial-crime risks. Its platform processes more than 100 billion events annually for banks, payment processors and other financial institutions.

Featurespace helps determine whether a transaction is legitimate. But a payment is often the final stage of an attack that began earlier. A criminal may open an account with stolen information, compromise an existing account or manipulate a legitimate customer into authorizing a transfer. In an authorized push-payment scam, the correct customer can pass authentication and personally approve the payment. By the time it reaches the network, the fraud has already succeeded.

This is the gap BioCatch fills. It strengthens identity proofing by identifying suspicious application, device and behavioral signals during onboarding, including indications of stolen or synthetic identities, automation and mule-account creation. It then supports continuous authentication by evaluating whether the device, behavior and apparent intent remain consistent with the legitimate customer throughout the digital session. Identity assurance therefore continues beyond account opening and login.

BioCatch’s platform combines several capabilities to deliver this protection. DeviceIQ creates a persistent device identity, evaluates the device environment and detects spoofing, emulators, jailbroken devices, cloaked browsers, agentic AI and deepfake-injection tools. BioCatch Align collects more than 3,000 behavioral, device, application, network and transactional signals through one SDK. Behavioral models analyze how customers type, navigate and handle their devices to detect account takeover, coercion and scammer manipulation. The platform also detects malware and remote-access activity, while BioCatch Link maps relationships among users, devices, accounts and payments to uncover mule networks and coordinated financial crime. Real-time scoring helps banks allow, challenge, block or investigate activity as it occurs.

Featurespace sees the movement of money. BioCatch interprets the identity, behavior and intent preceding it. Visa connects that intelligence across its global network.

Scale strengthens the proposition. BioCatch analyzes 19 billion digital sessions monthly, protecting 760 million users across 1.8 billion devices for more than 350 financial institutions.

This creates network effects: devices and fraud patterns identified at one participating institution can help expose related risks elsewhere, subject to privacy and data-governance controls.

The technology is also largely passive. Device, behavioral and transactional signals are evaluated in the background without requiring every customer to complete another identity check. Financial institutions can intervene selectively, reducing fraud without creating unnecessary friction for legitimate customers.

For Visa’s financial-institution customers, the combination delivers earlier fraud detection and a more unified view of identity, device, session and payment risk. It also reduces fragmented vendor integrations and extends protection across card, account-to-account and real-time payments.

The deal strengthens Visa’s Value-Added Services business, which it described in 2025 as a $9 billion global business that had delivered annualized revenue growth of approximately 20 percent since 2021. Because several Visa fraud and risk services support non-Visa transactions, BioCatch also expands Visa’s opportunity beyond its traditional card rails.

The acquisition means Visa is moving upstream—from protecting payments to establishing trust in the identity, device, session and intent behind them. Featurespace protects the movement of money; BioCatch protects the journey leading to it. Together, they position Visa to provide continuous trust from onboarding through payment.
