Emirates ID establishes ministry linkages, plans to replace labour cards with national ID
The Emirates Identity Authority (Emirates ID) has established a full e-linkage with the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Justice and has also launched an initiative to replace the Labour Ministry’s existing e-signature cards with the new national ID.
According to a report in Emirates247, the ID card can be a single docket of documentation and identification for UAE residents, holding their passport, labour card, driving license and health insurance details by the end of 2013. Following the completion of these ministry initiatives, Emirates ID will be distributing 500,000 card readers this year, which is anticipated to contribute to reducing the time required for completing transactions in many government organizations.
Reported previously in BiometricUpdate.com, the UAE Central Bank and Eirates ID have met to consider enhancing cooperation in regards to using the smart ID card and activating its applications in the financial sector.
According to a report in The Emirates News Agency, the UAE Central Bank clarified that its draft strategic and operational plan includes an iniative for creating an e-wallet system using the ID card that would ultimately replace cash for the management and operation of the UAE Central Bank.
Earlier this year, following a “technical glitch,” official transactions related to national ID cards in the UAE were disrupted for nearly two days.
