Sharp Aquos S2 leaked photos reveal bezel-less display with fingerprint sensor

A leaked press photo and a few hands-on images of Sharp’s yet-to-be-released Aquos S2 reveals that the smartphone will feature a near bezel-less display with a fingerprint scanner hidden underneath, according to a report by 9 to 5 Google.

The smartphone will join a handful of other recent smartphones that feature bezel-less displays, including the LG G6, Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+, and Andy Rubin’s Essential Phone.

Aquos S2 is expected to have a screen size of 5.5-inches, a resolution of 2040 x 1080, and a screen ratio of 17:9.

Additionally, the front of Aquos S2 will feature a set of dual cameras, with the front-facing camera located on the upper area of the display.

The sleek design allows the user to press their finger on top of the bottom part of the display while the fingerprint scanner below it — hidden from view — will verify their biometrics in order to access the device.

Industry insiders speculate that Sharp is using Qualcomm’s new ultrasonic sensors to do this, but this has yet to be confirmed.

Sharp will be hosting a press event in Beijing on August 8 to announce the Aquos S2, however, the smartphone will likely never be available in the United States.

Earlier this year, Sharp Mobile launched the Sharp Z3 for the Taiwanese market featuring Fingerprint Cards’ FPC1145 sensor.
