Remark Holdings facial biometrics to secure taxi fleet in Xi’an

A fleet of more than 2,000 taxis in the Chinese city of Xi’an is being upgraded with KanKan AI technology from Remark Holdings, which will provide biometric facial recognition for driver authentication and monitoring in a deal expected to generate $1 million in revenue when complete.

Technology deployed to the methanol-powered taxis will include an eight-inch display screen for navigation information, receiving online bookings, and QR-code-based payments, according to the announcement. A facial recognition login system ensures only qualified, authorized drivers operate the taxis, and drivers are monitored for violations such as smoking, operating a mobile device, or distracted driving. The driver can also monitor the front, back, and trunk of the vehicle with a four-channel camera system. The monitoring terminal can also transmit real-time video directly to traffic and public security departments over 4G networks.

“The introduction of our AI solutions into taxi fleets is an exciting new application that successfully solves the problem of providing for driver, passenger, and vehicle exterior safety,” says Remark Holdings Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Kai-Shing Tao. “The positive feedback and adoption from our taxi operators in Xi’an leads us to new growth opportunities in Guiyang and Chongqing, with an addressable market of 25,000 vehicles and an additional revenue opportunity of more than $10 million.”

Remark announced in May it would sell off Vegas.com and transition to an exclusive focus on AI and facial recognition.
