Offline mobile identity verification app with Tech5 facial recognition launched

An offline mobile application with biometric facial recognition technology from Tech5 has been launched in partnership with Pepper & Ink Technologies to enable instant identity verification using biometric and secure QR code technology, the companies announced.

Pepper & Ink Technologies offers mobile identity management with document verification and biometrics using enhanced 2D barcode technology. The company’s unique compression technology encodes and stores information in a 2D barcode, which combines with Tech5’s facial recognition to store customers’ ID information in a secure and cost-effective way, according to the announcement. No additional hardware or smart card is needed, the companies say, and information for a unique digital ID is encrypted with public key infrastructure (PKI) and stored in the barcode for printing on a surface or display on a screen. Information stored typically includes demographic information, and ID number, and a biometric template for face matching.

“Face recognition from TECH5 takes our unique enhanced QR Code solution to the next level, furthering our offering to bring in a liveness biometric factor, in an offline platform, thereby aptly bookending the issuance & verification cycle. This collaborative technology is a game-changer in the identity management space,” notes Pepper & Ink Technologies CEO Niranjan Gosavi.

The companies suggest the solution could be applied to functional ID in national ID projects, supporting government-issued documents such as birth certificates, or online payments for banking or retail services, among other uses.

“We are delighted to co-launch this unique solution which is a cost-effective alternative to smart cards. Now customers can easily access their data using only a smartphone and at the same time be absolutely sure that their ID information is protected,” says Tech5 Chairman and Co-founder Rahul Parthe. “The solution can be easily integrated with National ID platforms and scaled for national-sized projects”.

The partners plan to integrate other biometric modalities supported by Tech5, iris and fingerprint recognition, in the future.

Tech5 recently integrated its biometric software with the MOSIP initiative to support foundational ID systems.
