Coppel selects DigitalPersona for retail fingerprint solution

DigitalPersona, Inc., a global provider of biometrically enabled authentication and access management solutions, announced that Coppel Corporation has selected DigitalPersona U.are.U fingerprint readers for its customer and employee facing applications and systems.

The use of fingerprint biometrics will help Coppel, a leading retailer of home appliances, electronics, furniture, apparel and footwear in Latin America, improve the verification of purchases for its 20.6 million customers, along with increasing security and streamlining access to point of sale (POS) terminals and other back-end systems for more than 68,500 employees.

“The retail industry has goals of preventing fraudulent activities and improving customer satisfaction,” said Michael Printz, vice president of worldwide sales at DigitalPersona. “With DigitalPersona biometric solutions, retailers such as Coppel Corporation can accomplish these goals as well as streamline their operations.”

By adding support for DigitalPersona biometric technology to their software and infrastructure, Coppel Corporation has reduced the possibility of fraud and provided clients with a better customer experience.

With 127 distribution centers and 19 warehouses throughout Latin America, Coppel needed a way to better manage customer credit card information, as well as provide secure access to systems for its employees. After evaluating more than 20 different brands of fingerprint sensors, Coppel chose DigitalPersona because of its high accuracy and competitive pricing.

Fingerprint biometrics offers Coppel Corporation a way to keep identities protected, while automating password updates and creating ease-of-access for customers. DigitalPersona biometric readers capture fingerprint images to create a template. Customers feel more secure with Coppel credit cards, knowing that their individual fingerprint template is tied to the use of the card. Coppel also uses fingerprint biometrics to secure employee access to e-mail accounts, internal systems, reporting, program control, customer accounts and printing.

“We needed a solution that improves security for customer transactions, employee applications and systems, while being easy to use,” said Jose Mendoza, national systems manager at Coppel Corporation. “DigitalPersona’s biometric readers have reduced fraud and simplified transactions, making our customers more confident that their accounts are secure.”
