The FIDO Alliance has announced another new member to the group today: Sonavation.

Sonavation is the creator of a biometric authentication platform and application, which uses ultrasound imaging technologies and patented data encryption.

Joining as a sponsor member, Sonavation will work with fellow members to further the FIDO protocol, and include its ultrasound imaging sensors and encryption technologies into the framework.

“As a pioneer and leader in advanced, deep tissue ultrasound imaging and break through transactional encryption technologies, Sonavation is proud to join the prestigious FIDO Alliance and collaborate with some of the world’s leading technologists in the interest of making the digital world a safer place for everyone,” Robert E. Stewart, Sr., Chief Product Officer from Sonavation said. “By working collectively towards open standards and the integration of our patented ultrasound imaging and encryption platform across industry boundaries, we expect to help chart a path that benefits both consumers and our industry partners.”

As we’ve reported in the past, open FIDO specifications will support a full range of authentication technologies, including biometrics. These specifications are being deigned to be extensible and to accommodate future innovation, as well as to protect existing investments.

“We welcome Sonavation, and their insight and spirit of innovation to our growing Alliance,” Michael Barrett, FIDO Alliance president said. “The FIDO vision of universal strong authentication promises to reduce online fraud, and Sonavation’s advances can contribute. Sonavation joins the FIDO Alliance in support of an important goal for our industry: creating better authentication that is more secure, private and easy to use.”

Earlier today, the alliance also announced that Microsoft had joined its board of directors.

In October, the group announced that it had surpassed its 50-member milestone, just months from launching as an official organization.
