Samsung reported to ditch under-display fingerprint sensor for Galaxy Note 9

KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has issued a note telling investors that the forthcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 9 will not include an under-display fingerprint sensor, as both the optical and ultrasonic options do not meet its standards, AppleInsider reports.

Kuo does not see facial recognition as a suitable replacement for fingerprint authentication, and says the under-display technology is integral for smartphones with full-front displays, but it will not be ready for the anticipated Galaxy Note 9 release later this year.

“According to our understanding of the technologies, under-display fingerprint solutions may currently have many technical issues (e.g. screen protectors and different environments affecting recognition rates and power-consumption),” AppleInsider quotes from Kuo’s note.

The technology will be adopted by the mass market in the first half of 2019 at the earliest, Kuo says. In October he noted that anticipation for Face ID was turning Android developers away from under-display fingerprint sensors.

His contention that facial recognition does not fully replace the value of under-display fingerprint authentication echoes what Synaptics VP Godfrey Cheng told Biometric Update during a demonstration of the technology in the Vivo X20 Plus UD last month. New smartphones with under-display fingerprint sensors were also shown off at the recent Mobile World Congress.
