Vivo taps Synaptics again for smartphone under-display fingerprint sensor

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Vivo is following up its X20 Plus UD device, which featured an optical under-display fingerprint sensor from Synaptics, with the X21 UD, which also integrates a sensor from the Synaptics FS9500 Clear ID family.

The sensor’s operation will be similar to the X20 Plus UD, with a fingerprint icon lighting up to guide the placement of the user’s finger to a natural location on the OLED touchscreen, according to Synaptics’ announcement. Clear ID is faster than 3D facial recognition, the company says, and is available with Synaptics SentryPoint technology, which provides OEMs with a range of secure authentication software features.

The Vivo X21 UD is the second generation of smartphone from the company with a Synaptics under-display sensor. Synaptics Vice President of Marketing Godfrey Cheng told Biometric Update in December that OLED “infinity display” devices will soon reach the mainstream.

“It’s been terrific working with Vivo to bring cutting-edge leadership and differentiation to market with Clear ID. The fast-paced industry-shift towards bezel-free OLED infinity displays has driven fingerprint authentication into the touchscreen display area of smartphones and Synaptics proud to be mass-production-ready to take on volume demand,” said Kevin Barber, senior vice president and general manager, Mobile Division, Synaptics.
