JCB piloting biometrics payment card from IDEMIA
Japan-based international payments brand JCB Co. will conduct a pilot of its latest JCB Biometrics Card with fingerprint authentication. The contactless payment solution is provided by IDEMIA. Toppan Printing will also participate in respect to card personalization.
The trial first involves issuing the JCB Biometric Card to JCB employees starting this month to make purchases via fingerprint authentication at merchants accepting JCB Contactless payments. The purpose of the pilot is to validate whether the solution is convenient for consumers and practical for the payment.
In a blog post earlier this year, Fingerprint Cards said that 2018 is the year of on-card biometrics, due to advances in biometric performance and low power consumption, the proliferation of trials, and rising market demand. The post referred to a report by ABI Research which says the payment card will remain a popular payment form factor, and that fingerprint authentication is the next step in its development.
