BioCatch scales to 70 million users with Redis Enterprise

BioCatch is deploying Redis Enterprise VPC to scale its database as it keeps pace with rapid growth and product adoption.

It had become evident to BioCatch that its existing stack is not able to keep pace with the 5 billion transactions per month the company processes to provide real-time fraud detection and mitigation. It has redesigned its technology stack with Redis Labs’ database-as-a-service as the only stateful component, and it serves BioCatch’s 70 million users without downtime or operational hassle, with almost no latency, according to the announcement. Redis Labs bills its open source Redis as the world’s fastest in-memory database platform.

“Redis Enterprise just works,” says Dekel Shavit, VP of operations and CISO at BioCatch. “We no longer need to worry about anything related to data at scale or try to anticipate the future infrastructure requirements of an ever-changing market 24 months in advance.”

While BioCatch also runs Microsoft SQL Server, Apache Cassandra and Apache Impala databases, it has been moving more data to Redis Enterprise VPC, which now serves an average of 3 terabytes of data and 200 million keys at a given time to the microservices BioCatch runs its applications with.

“We looked to Redis Enterprise for caching initially, but quickly discovered that it is really good as a database—not just a simple database, but also a system configuration database,” Shavit adds. “Most of our data now resides in Redis Enterprise because it’s always available and it’s always highly responsive, no matter how you query it.”

Continuous authentication with behavioral biometrics from BioCatch was recently added to the ForgeRock Trust Network, and the company raised $30 million earlier this year as it continues to scale. To support its expected growth the company is also preparing to add other Redis Enterprise capabilities, including Redis on Flash and active-active geo-distribution, to reduce infrastructure costs and quickly and automatically propagate insights across regions.

“BioCatch is tackling a highly complicated set of data issues in its groundbreaking approach to solving biometrics challenges,” said Oren Yaqobi, VP customer success, of Redis Labs. “At the same time, given the seriousness and critical nature of the time-sensitive information BioCatch is tasked with managing and disseminating globally, it is of the utmost importance that they have solutions in their stack that are highly available and always at peak performance, no questions asked. That’s where we believe Redis Labs is best equipped to help now and as they continue to scale exponentially into the future.”
