Gemalto-secured national Belgian digital ID app reaches 1 million transactions per month

A year after its launch, Belgian national digital ID scheme itsme has enrolled 350,000 users and is securely processing one million transactions per month a year after its launch, powered by Gemalto’s mobile authentication solution.

Belgian Mobile ID, a consortium of the country’s leading banks and mobile network operators, collaborated with Gemalto to develop itsme, which provides consumers with convenient digital security, and merchants, government, and financial institutions with strong, multi-factor authentication, according to the announcement. The app is certified for eIDAS, and can be used to meet PSD2 and GDPR requirements.

The program is one of the most successful mobile ID applications in Europe, Gemalto says, and the average user completes six banking transactions and three e-government transactions each month.

“In an increasingly digital world the need for stronger and more trusted digital identities is growing,” says Gemalto CEO Philippe Vallée. “We know that consumers want their data to be secure, but they also want a painless and hassle-free experience when accessing online services. We hope that this is just the start and that further cooperation in this field will lead to more schemes providing a seamless online experience for everyone in Europe across many different sectors.”

Vallée and Belgium Mobile ID CEO Kris de Ryck are speaking on the topic of Digital Identity at Money20/20 this week in Amsterdam.

Gemalto has continued to win substantial biometric and national ID contracts as it moves toward a merger with Thales.
