iProov launches remote biometric authentication for web browsers to secure more transactions

iProov has introduced web browser-based biometric authentication that can be used by banks, governments, travel and healthcare providers to confirm remote customer presence, the company announced.

“With iProov Web, we are now enabling organizations to deliver the same uniquely secure and effortless authentication process on a web browser,” said Andrew Bud, iProov CEO, in a prepared statement. “Users without smartphones or those who prefer to use laptops or desktop computers for online banking or other secure services can now benefit from the same effortless user journeys as mobile users. It means a hugely improved digital customer experience, greater inclusivity and accessibility, and access to a larger audience.”

The biometrics company claims more than three million people have deployed its patented Flashmark technology since 2018 to confirm presence in mobile apps. To access a bank account or register for a secure service, users have to hold the mobile device to their face for authentication to be completed when a unique colored illumination confirms their presence.

iProov technology has been implemented by a number of prominent organizations, including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.K. Home Office, Standard Bank in South Africa, and ING in the Netherlands.

Genuine presence assurance has been extended to web browsers for use on laptops, desktop computers, tablets, kiosks and others. iProov reports 37 percent of web traffic in 2019 was generated by desktop or laptop computers, but that includes most large purchases, and delivered 56 percent of web revenue.

iProov Web provides enhanced security against deepfakes, access to individuals who do not have access to smartphones, improves user experience by reducing drop-off during registration and transactions, and enables access to digital services without having to download an additional app, the company claims. It can be rolled out for digital onboarding, as a device-independent biometric factor for multi-factor authentication, account and password recovery.

“iProov Web is a game changer for the digital identity industry,” added Bud. “Millions of people around the world have iProoved themselves on a mobile app, accessing online government, banking or travel services securely by proving that they are who they say they are and that they are genuinely present during the authentication.”

In February, iProov opened its U.S. headquarters and appointed an executive team for business development in the North American biometric security market.
