Register for session #1 of the ID2020 “Summit Sessions” Webinar Series. This series offers an opportunity to explore a variety of topics related to advancing ID2020’s vision of “good digital ID for all”.

In April 2019, the McKinsey Global Institute released a report which posited that, while there are inherent risks, a “well-designed, digital ID not only enables civic and social empowerment, but also makes possible real and inclusive economic gains”. They estimated that, by 2030, “digital ID has the potential to create economic value equivalent to six percent of GDP in emerging economies on a per-country basis and three percent in mature economies, assuming high levels of adoption”.

But digital ID is difficult to get right and requires a delicate balance between often competing goals. India’s Aadhaar and UK.Gov Verify have illustrated some of these challenges. Recent, high-profile data breaches have proven to be a double-edged sword, on one hand making people more cognizant of how their identity is being misused and, on the other, sowing mistrust in all forms of digital ID.

Fully realizing the potential of digital ID will require technology providers, policymakers, and civil society to collaborate — and quickly – to build and implement functional, privacy-preserving, user-manage ID systems and overcome the mistrust which could impede their broad adoption. The road to good ID for all is riddled with landmines…and we have one chance to get this right.

ID2020 has a great panel of speakers lined up. Register now for what is expected to be a lively and thought-provoking discussion.
