Gov. Scott signs Bill 188 into law, bans biometrics in Florida schools
Florida’s Governor Rick Scott has signed Bill 188 into law, banning the collection of biometric information from students in Florida schools.
In addition Bill 188 also mandates that the Department of Education assign Florida Student Numbers to replace the use of social security numbers to manage school records.
“I want to applaud Governor Rick Scott for signing and supporting this historic legislation to protect Florida’s students and their sensitive personal information,” Senator Dorothy Hukill, who has spearheaded this bill, said. “I want to also thank Representative Jake Rayburn (R-Lithia), sponsor of House Bill 195, and members of the Florida Legislature for their support. Florida’s children depend on us to do everything possible to ensure that they are safe and that their information is protected. As parents, educators, legislators and citizens we are meeting that challenge and protecting our most precious resources with the passage of this legislation.”

Great! I get to be in a state that is FIRST in something that no one who knows how biometrics works wants to happen! It is secure and I would love to see Dorothy Hukill hire someone to hack into the encrypted information WITHOUT THE TEMPLATE and STILL get any useful personal info about our students! Then throw in the template and still see how little there is to gather! Love you biometric companies! I’ll have to say goodbye for a while till a FL senator gets some real understanding of the convenience and effective privacy biometrics has to offer compared to any other system our schools are using.
