Amkor to mass produce IDEX fingerprint sensors

Fingerprint imaging and recognition technology provider IDEX ASA has entered into an agreement with Amkor, a provider of outsourced advanced semiconductor assembly, for the mass production of IDEX’s fingerprint sensors.

A memorandum of understanding between the companies announced Tuesday specifies that IDEX advanced off-chip fingerprint sensors will now be manufactured by Amkor as a first-tier supply chain partner, helping IDEX achieve competitive commercialization.

The companies will leverage Amkor’s strong established customer base to increase finger print sensor deployment and market penetration within high-growth market sectors.

Amkor has previously produced high-volume finger print sensors for the mobile market, all while achieving excellent production yields and using cost-efficiency.

This partnership provides a strong platform to enable IDEX to service multiple OEM’s and strengthens the commercialization phase for high-volume execution.

This year has been a big one for IDEX. In January, it received a $49 million investment from Invesco, and World Wide Touch Technology ordered 300,000 of its Colibri swipe sensors for use in its FIngerQ product line. It has also announced a number of partnerships and licensing agreements including ones with Cypress Semiconductor, BIO-key International, and CrucialTec.

In July, the company received an order from Card Tech for fingerprint swipe sensors to integrate into Card Tech’s patented ISO-compliant system-on-card solution which is aimed at the access control and ID markets.
